Rogogin fuses steel on Funny island

Sergey Rogogin, following today`s huge popularity of musicals, has agreed to play a main role in the musical by the St.-Petersburg Music Hall. The musical has two names, "Lust Island" and "The Happy Island During the times of Catherine the Great".

Here is what the singer told us:

- We have been rehearsing for three months now. I am going to work every day, except Monday. I look forward to Monday as a blessing from God. I used to be a  free artist and now I feel like a  steel-worker near the blast furnace! Our musical is original, not a remake of a western original.

The action takes place during the times of Catherine the Great. Everything is there - love, cunning and treachery. Just like in “Cops” where I have playing gangster, my character in “The Happy Island” is negative. My character - Pavel - is a young man, the son of the architect who is rebuilding the Peter and Paul Fortress, which was done in preparation for Catherina`s crowning, and just during this moment the angel is being put on the bell tower.

The music was written by... Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911). To be more exact it is the remake of Mahler's music. The libretto was written by Lev Rahlin and Olga Gavrilova, very interesting decorations, scenery, special effects and so on...

When Lev Ilyich (Rahlin) asked me to participate, I replied: “If it was going to  be like “Utrennaya Pochta” in 1975, then I wanted no part in the project". However, after I read the script, listened to the music, and looked through the sketches of decorations ans costumes, I realised everything was being done on a very high level and I agreed to participate.

However, I had no idea what I was getting into. The whole play centers arround my character and there are no stand-ins. The opening night is on May 13th, and after that we will be playing every night though June 1st. By the way, when I was singing in “Forum”, sometimes I was told “It will be difficult for you to sing” and I answered: “It`s not like this is Mahler's symphony number eight!”  When I have found out the musical was made from the music of Mahler, I have asked with sarcasm “And how about symphony number eight?” and I was told “Yes!” Mahler is Mahler: cannons, rhymes, the music is not easy and sometimes difficult, but it was very interesting for me to sing and rehearse .
